Biography
For me, being a lawyer means to help those in need. - Joe Jamail, Trial Lawyer
JT has been helping people in need since he became an attorney in 1996. Initially, he represented people who were accused of crimes by state and federal prosecutors. As a criminal defense attorney, he represented people from all different levels of society, including homeless juveniles, housewives, bank and insurance executives, police officers, and the leader of an international drug cartel.
In 2010, JT was asked by a friend to help him on a case involving the death of a resident of a nursing home. At first, he was hesitant since his experience was limited to handling criminal cases. But he realized that the family of the resident were in need. So, he decided to help them and ended up changing the focus of his practice. Since then, he has represented families and individuals whose lives have been affected by the malpractice of medical providers whether they are nursing homes, hospitals, or individual medical providers.
JT has given seminar presentations to medical malpractice attorneys from Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.
JT has also been recognized by his peers as being one of the leading medical malpractice attorneys in Austin in a poll taken by Austin Monthly magazine in 2020 and 2021.
JT is admitted to the Texas State Bar and is a member of Capitol Area Trial Lawyers Association, Texas Trial Lawyers Association (“TTLA”), and the American Association for Justice (“AAJ”), for which he was the Chair of their Government Relations Committee.
It’s every lawyer’s dream to help shape the law, not just to react to it. - Alan Dershowitz, Harvard Law School Professor.
Each legislative session in Texas, JT serves on TTLA’s Medical Malpractice Bill Review Committee, and, on several occasions, TTLA has asked him to lobby Texas state Representatives and Senators on medical negligence issues. He has also been asked by Legislators by several Texas Legislators to help them in crafting legislative proposals to help strengthen laws in favor of patients.
JT was born in Greenville, South Carolina. His father was in the ministry, which led to his family moving often. JT has lived in South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois, and Texas.
Although most of his time is devoted to being an attorney, JT is a devoted family man. He and his wife have been married since 1987 and they have been blessed with two wonderful children and two grandsons, so far.
